Methodology

UK National Insurance Calculator methodology

Estimate employee Category A National Insurance for one 2026-27 pay period without implying PAYE or complete payroll accuracy. Scope: Great Britain, Category A, 6 April 2026 to 5 April 2027. Official source: HM Revenue & Customs 2026-27 employer rates and thresholds, reviewed 27 July 2026.

Educational only: Work and pay decision support, not tax, legal, financial or career advice.

Privacy: Calculations run locally; Wage101 does not receive your work or pay inputs.

Update policy: Reviewed when formulas or official dependencies change.

Scope: UK work and pay planning using your own assumptions.

Money inputs and outputs use GBP. Pay, time, benefits and work-related costs use the units stated beside each input.

2. Worked example

Input assumptions

Calculate Category A NI on ยฃ2,500 of monthly gross pay.

Calculation and outputs

Example

Calculate Category A NI on ยฃ2,500 of monthly gross pay.

Employee National Insurance
116.16 currency units
Earnings in the 8% band
1,452.00 currency units
Earnings in the 2% band
0.00 currency units
Primary threshold used
1,048.00 currency units
Upper earnings limit used
4,189.00 currency units

The 8% and 2% earnings bands remain visible beside the contribution.

Interpretation

Use the result only for employee Category A on the selected payroll-period basis.

3. Validation and boundary checks

  • Gross pay is finite and non-negative.
  • Pay frequency is weekly or monthly.
  • The engine category is fixed to A; other categories fail closed.

4. Assumptions and source classification

  • The worker is correctly classified in National Insurance category A.
  • The pay amount and frequency use the same payroll period.
  • Official 2026-27 thresholds and rates are fixed and are not editable assumptions.

Official dependencies used by this calculator are captured in the Wage101 evidence register and version-acknowledged in this page history. User-entered work and pay assumptions remain separate from those official inputs.

5. Limitations

  • PAYE, tax codes, Scottish income tax, student loans and take-home pay are excluded.
  • National Insurance categories other than A are unsupported.
  • Directors, annual earnings periods and other director-specific methods are excluded.

This is educational decision support, not personalised tax, legal, financial or career advice. Check how the rules that apply in United Kingdom treat your work and pay circumstances, and seek qualified advice where appropriate.

6. Update and evidence policy

Registered family-level suites test formula invariants and example reconciliation; the release ledger records that coverage without claiming a separate oracle for every line of public copy. Registered official sources block dependent public workflows when their evidence or version acknowledgement is unavailable or invalid. Work and pay inputs remain user-supplied because they vary by person, job and contract.
