Confirm the category before calculating
The initial calculator state is intentionally unconfirmed. Age or a training label alone is not enough for Wage101 to decide whether adult, starting-out or training applies, and the tool does not decide whether an exemption exists.
| Confirmed category | Official hourly rate | Boundary |
|---|---|---|
| Adult | NZ$23.95/hour | Use only after confirming that the adult category applies. |
| Starting-out | NZ$19.16/hour | Wage101 does not test the category’s age and situation conditions. |
| Training | NZ$19.16/hour | Wage101 does not test the required training conditions or credits. |
Use every hour worked and gross pay for the same period
The input must include every hour actually worked in the pay period, including extra hours. Contracted, ordinary or scheduled hours are not a safe substitute when the worker performed more time.
Compare the resulting minimum amount with actual gross pay before tax and lawful deductions for the same period. Take-home pay and hours from a different period do not create a like-for-like comparison.
- Confirm the category outside the calculator.
- Total every hour actually worked in the selected pay period.
- Use actual gross pay covering exactly those hours.
- Do not average away extra hours across a season or a different period.
Forty adult-category hours create an NZ$8 shortfall in the example
The production example selects adult only after confirmation, enters 40 hours worked and compares the result with NZ$950 of actual gross pay.
| Step or output | Exact value | Interpretation |
|---|---|---|
| Confirmed category rate | NZ$23.95/hour | Adult rate effective from 1 April 2026. |
| Every hour worked | 40 hours | All hours in the entered pay period. |
| Minimum gross pay | NZ$958.00 | NZ$23.95 multiplied by 40 hours. |
| Actual gross pay | NZ$950.00 | Entered gross amount for those same 40 hours. |
| Minimum-pay shortfall | NZ$8.00 | Maximum of zero and NZ$958 less NZ$950. |
Extra hours can change the comparison even when gross pay does not
The calculator’s extra-hours check holds actual gross pay at NZ$958 but increases adult-category hours from 40 to 45. The minimum gross amount becomes NZ$1,077.75, producing an NZ$119.75 shortfall.
That comparison explains why an ordinary-hours-only payload fails the product contract. It does not add an overtime premium or decide that any separate overtime rule applies.
| Input or output | 40-hour basis | 45-hour basis |
|---|---|---|
| Confirmed adult rate | NZ$23.95/hour | NZ$23.95/hour |
| Hours included | 40 | 45 |
| Minimum gross pay | NZ$958.00 | NZ$1,077.75 |
| Actual gross pay | NZ$958.00 | NZ$958.00 |
| Displayed shortfall | NZ$0.00 | NZ$119.75 |
A zero shortfall is not a complete compliance certificate
The shortfall is floored at zero, so a zero means only that actual gross pay is not below the selected rate-times-hours amount in this bounded comparison. It does not validate the category, hours record, pay components, deductions or employment agreement.
Compulsory employer superannuation cannot be used as part of the minimum-wage hourly rate in this reviewed boundary. Keep employer super separate from the gross-pay comparison.
