US Tipped Wage: what the Wage101 calculator includes

Calculate the federal employer cash shortfall for a confirmed FLSA tip-credit workweek of no more than 40 hours.

Three facts must be confirmed before the arithmetic starts

The calculation is available only after FLSA tip-credit coverage, federal-only jurisdiction and the employer tip-credit notice are all confirmed outside Wage101. Those are legal and factual inputs, not conclusions inferred from a job title, pay rate or tip amount.

The calculator supports one workweek with no more than 40 hours. If overtime, a state or local tipped-wage rule, an exemption or another special branch may apply, stop rather than treating the federal result as a fallback answer.

  • Confirm that the worker and workweek are covered by the federal FLSA tip-credit branch.
  • Identify the state and locality where the workweek was performed, then check the responsible state and local authorities for the applicable tipped-wage and minimum-wage branch.
  • Confirm that a federal-only comparison is appropriate; otherwise stop rather than using the federal result as a fallback compliance answer.
  • Confirm the employer notice requirement outside the calculator.
  • Enter actual tips received in this workweek, not an assumed or expected amount.
  • Do not use this branch for a workweek above 40 hours.

Cash, actual tips and credited tips are different amounts

Reviewed federal tipped-wage components
ComponentReviewed amount or ruleMeaning in Wage101
Federal minimum floor$7.25 per hourThe bounded workweek floor after the required employer cash adjustment.
Minimum direct cash wage$2.13 per hourThe federal direct-cash floor enforced separately from the total floor.
Maximum federal tip credit$5.12 per hourThe most tips can contribute per hour toward this federal comparison.
Actual tipsUser-entered workweek amountTips actually received; the tool does not invent or forecast them.
Employer cash shortfallCalculated amountAdditional employer cash required by the bounded federal floor arithmetic.

The confirmed 40-hour fixture produces a $44.80 shortfall

The production fixture uses a $2.13 direct cash wage, 40 hours and $160 of actual tips. Every value below is in USD for that workweek.

calculator-aligned federal tipped-wage example
StepCalculationAmount
Entered employer cash pay$2.13 ร— 40$85.20
Federal minimum floor$7.25 ร— 40$290.00
Maximum available tip credit$5.12 ร— 40$204.80
Actual tips creditedLesser supported amount in this fixture$160.00
Employer cash shortfall$290.00 โˆ’ $85.20 โˆ’ $160.00$44.80
Required employer cash pay$85.20 + $44.80$130.00
Cash plus actual tips after shortfall$130.00 + $160.00$290.00

Read the shortfall as one federal trace, not a complete wage decision

Actual tips can exceed the amount credited toward the federal floor because the credit is limited by the remaining gap and the federal hourly cap. The combined-pay line includes all actual tips entered, while the credited-tips line shows only the amount used in the floor comparison.

A zero shortfall means only that the confirmed inputs satisfy this bounded federal arithmetic. It does not establish that cash wages, notice, tip handling, deductions or the applicable state or local rule comply with every requirement.

Stop when the workweek leaves the captured federal branch

  • No state or local tipped-wage, minimum-wage or more-protective standard.
  • No overtime, workweek above 40 hours or DOL Fact Sheet #23 calculation.
  • No worker classification, FLSA coverage, exemption or notice-sufficiency decision.
  • No tip-pool, tip-ownership, distribution, deduction or service-charge analysis.
  • No wage claim, retaliation, penalty, damages or personalised legal advice.
  • Do not label the result total wages owed, take-home pay or a compliance determination.
