1. Formulas and units

Flat-plan commission
commissionAmount = salesAmount ร— commissionRate

Where

salesAmount
Commissionable sales (currency units)Source: Work record
commissionRate
Commission rate (decimal rate)Source: Work record
commissionAmount
Commission amount (currency units/year)Source: Calculated output
Flat-plan total gross pay
totalPay = basePay + salesAmount ร— commissionRate

Where

basePay
Base annual pay (currency units/year)Source: Work record
salesAmount
Commissionable sales (currency units)Source: Work record
commissionRate
Commission rate (decimal rate)Source: Work record
totalPay
Total gross pay (currency units/year)Source: Calculated output
Marginal-tier commission
commissionAmount = firstTierAmount ร— firstTierRate + secondTierAmount ร— secondTierRate + topTierAmount ร— topTierRate

Where

firstTierRate
First tier rate (decimal rate)Source: Work record
secondTierRate
Second tier rate (decimal rate)Source: Work record
topTierRate
Open-ended top tier rate (decimal rate)Source: Work record
commissionAmount
Commission amount (currency units/year)Source: Calculated output
Marginal-tier total gross pay
totalPay = basePay + commissionAmount

Where

basePay

commissionAmount

totalPay
Total gross pay (currency units/year)Source: Calculated output

Money inputs and outputs use the currency selected in the scenario without changing the canonical methodology. Pay, time, benefits and work-related costs use the units stated beside each input.

2. Worked example

Input assumptions

Base annual pay of 40,000, commissionable sales of 200,000 and a flat commission rate of 5%.

Calculation and outputs

Example

Base annual pay of 40,000, commissionable sales of 200,000 and a flat commission rate of 5%.

Commission amount
10,000.00 currency units
Total gross pay
50,000.00 currency units

The result keeps base pay and selected-plan commission visible as separate parts of total gross pay.

Interpretation

Use total pay only when the entered sales amount is fully commissionable under the selected flat or marginal-tier plan.

3. Validation and boundary checks

  • Zero sales produce zero commission.
  • Flat mode applies one rate to all commissionable sales.
  • Tiered mode applies each rate only to its marginal sales slice.
  • Tier bounds stay increasing and rates remain within the engine bound.

4. Assumptions and source classification

  • The entered sales amount is fully commissionable.
  • Tiered mode uses two entered bounds followed by one open-ended top tier.
  • Amounts are gross before tax.

This calculator has no current policy-data dependency. Its work and pay assumptions are user supplied. Registered family-level regression suites exercise the shared work-logic engine and worked-result reconciliation.

5. Limitations

  • Actual crediting, returns and timing may differ.
  • Draws, clawbacks, caps and more than three tiers are not modelled.
  • The result does not predict sales performance.

This is educational decision support, not personalised tax, legal, financial or career advice. Check the treatment of your circumstances under the rules that apply to you and seek qualified advice where appropriate.

6. Update and evidence policy

Registered family-level suites test formula invariants and example reconciliation; the release ledger records that coverage without claiming a separate oracle for every line of public copy. There is no official threshold or benchmark to refresh for this calculator. Work and pay inputs remain user-supplied because they vary by person, job and contract.
