1. Formulas and units
netPay = grossPay โ totalDeductionsWhere
- grossPay
- Gross pay (currency units/period)Source: User assumption
- netPay
- Net pay under entered rates (currency units/period)Source: Calculated output
- totalDeductions
- Total entered deductions (currency units/period)Source: Calculated output
totalDeductions = taxAmount + otherPercentageDeductions + fixedDeductionsWhere
- fixedDeductions
- Fixed deductions (currency units/period)Source: User assumption
- totalDeductions
- Total entered deductions (currency units/period)Source: Calculated output
- taxAmount
- Tax amount at entered rate (currency units/period)Source: Calculated output
- otherPercentageDeductions
- Other Percentage Deductions (currency units/year)Source: Calculated output
taxAmount = grossPay ร taxRateWhere
- grossPay
- Gross pay (currency units/period)Source: User assumption
- taxRate
- Entered tax rate (share of gross pay)Source: User assumption
- taxAmount
- Tax amount at entered rate (currency units/period)Source: Calculated output
netHourlyRate = netPay รท hoursWhere
- hours
- Hours in period (hours/period)Source: User assumption
- netPay
- Net pay under entered rates (currency units/period)Source: Calculated output
- netHourlyRate
- Net hourly equivalent (currency units/hour)Source: Calculated output
effectiveDeductionRate = totalDeductions รท grossPayWhere
- grossPay
- Gross pay (currency units/period)Source: User assumption
- totalDeductions
- Total entered deductions (currency units/period)Source: Calculated output
- effectiveDeductionRate
- Effective entered deduction rate (share of gross pay)Source: Calculated output
Money inputs and outputs use the currency selected in the scenario without changing the canonical methodology. Pay, time, benefits and work-related costs use the units stated beside each input.
2. Worked example
Input assumptions
Apply entered rates of 20% tax and 5% other deductions plus 100 fixed deductions to 5,000 gross pay.
Calculation and outputs
Example
Apply entered rates of 20% tax and 5% other deductions plus 100 fixed deductions to 5,000 gross pay.
- Net pay under entered rates
- 3,650.00 currency units
- Total entered deductions
- 1,350.00 currency units
- Tax amount at entered rate
- 1,000.00 currency units
- Net hourly equivalent
- 22.81 currency units
- Effective entered deduction rate
- 27%
The result is explicitly based only on your entered deduction assumptions.
Interpretation
The result is an entered-rate scenario, not official take-home pay.
3. Validation and boundary checks
- Gross pay and hours are positive.
- Entered UI rates stay between 0 and 1.
- Total deductions cannot exceed gross pay.
4. Assumptions and source classification
- Rates and fixed deductions are supplied by the user.
- All values use the same pay period.
- One flat rate is applied to the entire gross amount.
This calculator has no current policy-data dependency. Its work and pay assumptions are user supplied. Registered family-level regression suites exercise the shared work-logic engine and worked-result reconciliation.
5. Limitations
- This is not an official tax, payroll or take-home-pay calculator.
- No brackets, allowances, credits, caps, filing status or jurisdiction rules are applied.
- A user-entered rate may not match actual deductions.
This is educational decision support, not personalised tax, legal, financial or career advice. Check the treatment of your circumstances under the rules that apply to you and seek qualified advice where appropriate.
6. Update and evidence policy
Registered family-level suites test formula invariants and example reconciliation; the release ledger records that coverage without claiming a separate oracle for every line of public copy. There is no official threshold or benchmark to refresh for this calculator. Work and pay inputs remain user-supplied because they vary by person, job and contract.
