1. Formulas and units

Net hourly rate
netHourlyRate = netFee รท totalHours

Where

netHourlyRate
Net hourly rate (currency units/hour)Source: Calculated output
totalHours
Total project hours (hours/project)Source: Calculated output
netFee
Net Fee (currency units/year)Source: Calculated output
Gross hourly rate
grossHourlyRate = projectFee รท totalHours

Where

projectFee
Project fee (currency units/project)Source: User assumption
grossHourlyRate
Gross hourly rate (currency units/hour)Source: Calculated output
totalHours
Total project hours (hours/project)Source: Calculated output
Total hours
totalHours = deliveryHours + nonDeliveryHours

Where

deliveryHours
Delivery hours (hours/project)Source: User assumption
nonDeliveryHours
Non-delivery hours (hours/project)Source: User assumption
totalHours
Total project hours (hours/project)Source: Calculated output
Maximum hours
maximumHoursAtTargetRate = netFee รท targetHourlyRate

Where

targetHourlyRate
Target hourly rate (currency units/hour)Source: User assumption
maximumHoursAtTargetRate
Maximum hours at target (hours/project)Source: Calculated output
netFee
Net Fee (currency units/year)Source: Calculated output
Rate margin
rateMargin = maximumHoursAtTargetRate โˆ’ totalHours

Where

totalHours
Total project hours (hours/project)Source: Calculated output
maximumHoursAtTargetRate
Maximum hours at target (hours/project)Source: Calculated output
rateMargin
Hour margin to target (hours/project)Source: Calculated output

Money inputs and outputs use the currency selected in the scenario without changing the canonical methodology. Pay, time, benefits and work-related costs use the units stated beside each input.

2. Worked example

Input assumptions

Test a 12,000 fee with 140 total hours, 1,000 direct costs and a 75 target rate.

Calculation and outputs

Example

Test a 12,000 fee with 140 total hours, 1,000 direct costs and a 75 target rate.

Net hourly rate
78.57 currency units
Gross hourly rate
85.71 currency units
Total project hours
140
Maximum hours at target
146.67
Hour margin to target
6.67

Gross rate, net rate and target hour margin stay separate.

Interpretation

Use net hourly rate only after counting non-delivery time and direct costs.

3. Validation and boundary checks

  • Direct costs cannot exceed the project fee.
  • Total project hours must be positive.
  • Target hourly rate must be positive.

4. Assumptions and source classification

  • All hours are attributable to this project.
  • Direct costs are entered before tax.
  • One target rate applies to all hours.

This calculator has no current policy-data dependency. Its work and pay assumptions are user supplied. Registered family-level regression suites exercise the shared work-logic engine and worked-result reconciliation.

5. Limitations

  • No tax, payment risk, scope change, overhead allocation or market rate is inferred.
  • A positive target margin is not a profit guarantee.
  • Timing of cash collection is excluded.

This is educational decision support, not personalised tax, legal, financial or career advice. Check the treatment of your circumstances under the rules that apply to you and seek qualified advice where appropriate.

6. Update and evidence policy

Registered family-level suites test formula invariants and example reconciliation; the release ledger records that coverage without claiming a separate oracle for every line of public copy. There is no official threshold or benchmark to refresh for this calculator. Work and pay inputs remain user-supplied because they vary by person, job and contract.
