- weeklyCommuteHours
- Weekly commute hours (hours/week)Source: User assumption
- workWeeksPerYear
- Work weeks per year (weeks/year)Source: User assumption
- annualNetBenefit

- annualDirectCosts
- Annual direct costs (currency units/year)Source: User assumption

- annualNetBenefit
- Annual net benefit (currency units/year)Source: Calculated output

Money inputs and outputs use the currency selected in the scenario without changing the canonical methodology. Pay, time, benefits and work-related costs use the units stated beside each input.
2. Worked example
Input assumptions
Estimate a 15,000 second job with 4,500 of entered deductions and costs over 672 committed hours.
Calculation and outputs
Example
Estimate a 15,000 second job with 4,500 of entered deductions and costs over 672 committed hours.
- Annual net benefit
- 10,500.00 currency units
- Value per committed hour
- 15.63 currency units
- Break-even annual earnings
- 4,500.00 currency units
- Retained earnings rate
- 70%
Net annual and hourly value remain separate from gross earnings.
Interpretation
Use net annual and hourly value together; neither is the same as gross second-job pay.
3. Validation and boundary checks
- Annual earnings are positive.
- Work weeks stay between 1 and 53.
- All deductions and costs are entered by the user.
4. Assumptions and source classification
- Entered deductions already reflect any user-chosen tax estimate.
- Commute time is part of committed time.
- The schedule repeats for the entered work weeks.
This calculator has no current policy-data dependency. Its work and pay assumptions are user supplied. Registered family-level regression suites exercise the shared work-logic engine and worked-result reconciliation.
5. Limitations
- No local tax, benefits or employment rule is applied.
- Fatigue and opportunity cost are not monetised.
- Actual deductions and costs may vary.
This is educational decision support, not personalised tax, legal, financial or career advice. Check the treatment of your circumstances under the rules that apply to you and seek qualified advice where appropriate.
6. Update and evidence policy
Registered family-level suites test formula invariants and example reconciliation; the release ledger records that coverage without claiming a separate oracle for every line of public copy. There is no official threshold or benchmark to refresh for this calculator. Work and pay inputs remain user-supplied because they vary by person, job and contract.
