Count recurring cash costs without importing local defaults
Enter the costs that actually occur for one round-trip commute day. Travel cost can represent fares, fuel or another direct amount; parking, tolls and other daily costs stay visible as a second input. Include vehicle depreciation only if you have chosen and entered an amount yourself.
- Commute days per week and working weeks per year
- Round-trip travel cost per commute day
- Parking, tolls and other direct cost per day
- Door-to-door round-trip minutes
- A personal value of one hour of commute time
Worked example from daily inputs to annual burden
Annual burden equals annual out-of-pocket cost plus annual commute hours multiplied by the entered value of time. The time component is an analytical assumption, not cash leaving an account.
| Calculation row | Result |
|---|---|
| 48 weeks × 5 days | 240 commute days |
| 12 travel + 6 parking/tolls/other | 18/day direct cost |
| 240 days × 18 | 4,320 annual out-of-pocket cost |
| 240 days × 70 minutes | 280 annual commute hours |
| 280 hours × 25/hour | 7,000 annual time value |
| 4,320 + 7,000 | 11,320 annual combined burden |
| Annual burden ÷ 12 | 943.33 monthly burden |
| Annual burden ÷ 240 days | 47.17 per commute day |
Do not confuse time value with a bill
The 4,320 out-of-pocket result is entered recurring spending. The 7,000 time-value result expresses how heavily the scenario weights 280 hours; it is not a reimbursement, wage or official rate. Read both components before using the 11,320 combined figure.
Test more than one personal time value, including zero if you want a cash-only view. Also vary commute days and working weeks when attendance is seasonal or hybrid.
Keep the estimate tied to your route and schedule
The calculator fetches no route, fuel-price, fare, mileage or carbon data and does not forecast delays. If commute frequency is part of a job decision, carry the cash and time outputs into the Remote vs Office Job comparison rather than counting them twice.

Worked example: Commute Cost Calculator
The calculator normalizes the inputs above, applies Annual commute burden, and returns the outputs below. The displayed result is therefore reproducible in the linked calculator.
| Measure | Result | Interpretation |
|---|---|---|
| Annual commute burden | 11,320 currency units/year | Annual direct commute cost plus entered time value. |
| Annual out-of-pocket cost | 4,320 currency units/year | Commute days multiplied by entered daily direct costs. |
| Annual commute hours | 280 hours/year | Round-trip minutes annualised through the entered schedule. |
| Monthly commute burden | 943.33 currency units/month | Annual combined burden divided by twelve. |
Interpret the result and test Commute days per week
- Annual commute burden: 11,320 currency units/year. Annual direct commute cost plus entered time value.
- Annual out-of-pocket cost: 4,320 currency units/year. Commute days multiplied by entered daily direct costs.
- Annual commute hours: 280 hours/year. Round-trip minutes annualised through the entered schedule.
- Monthly commute burden: 943.33 currency units/month. Annual combined burden divided by twelve.
| Result | Baseline | Changed-input scenario | How to read it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Annual commute burden | 11,320 currency units/year | 12,452 currency units/year | Annual direct commute cost plus entered time value. |
| Annual out-of-pocket cost | 4,320 currency units/year | 4,752 currency units/year | Commute days multiplied by entered daily direct costs. |
| Annual commute hours | 280 hours/year | 308 hours/year | Round-trip minutes annualised through the entered schedule. |
| Monthly commute burden | 943.33 currency units/month | 1,037.67 currency units/month | Annual combined burden divided by twelve. |
Checks that are specific to Commute Cost Calculator
- Zero commute days produce zero burden.
- Daily costs and time values cannot be negative.
- Annual burden equals direct cost plus time value.
What this Commute Cost Calculator guide includes and excludes
- The commute pattern repeats for entered weeks.
- Round-trip minutes are door to door.
- Value of time is a personal scenario assumption.
