Use personal annual costs, not one broad city multiplier
Broad price-level indexes describe aggregate baskets and cannot reproduce one household’s rent, transport, benefits or work pattern. Enter the costs that change for your scenario and leave unchanged amounts explicit rather than assuming every expense moves by one percentage.
- Current salary and benefits in both locations
- Current and target annual living costs
- Current and target direct work costs
- Annual time burden in each location and one value-of-time assumption
- One-time relocation costs and the comparison horizon
Choose a horizon you can explain
The calculator divides one-time relocation cost by the number of comparison years. In the fixture, 9,000 over three years becomes 3,000 per year. A shorter horizon raises the annualized cost and required salary; a longer horizon lowers both.
The horizon changes only how the one-time cost is allocated. It does not forecast tenure or make the move refundable if plans change.
Worked salary bridge to scenario parity
| Bridge item | Current location | Target location / effect |
|---|---|---|
| Salary | 80,000 | Solve for required amount |
| Entered benefits | 8,000 | 8,000 |
| Annual living costs | 36,000 | 42,000 |
| Annual work costs | 3,000 | 2,000 |
| Time burden at 25/hour | 240 hours | 120 hours |
| Moving cost | — | 9,000 ÷ 3 = 3,000/year |
| Current net annual value | 43,000 | Preserved |
| Required target salary | — | 85,000 |
| Required change | — | +5,000; +6.25% |
Test uncertain costs before treating the target as a threshold
Vary target living cost, relocation horizon and target time burden one at a time. The result is most useful as a transparent scenario range when rent, travel or moving quotes are still uncertain.
No cost-of-living dataset, exchange rate, tax assumption, market forecast or lifestyle-quality score is applied. Compare the complete offer separately, especially when benefits or working time also change.

Estimate target salary from an 80,000 current salary, higher living costs, lower commute burden and 9,000 moving costs over three years.
Inputs used in the Relocation Salary Equivalent Calculator worked example

Worked example: Relocation Salary Equivalent Calculator
The calculator normalizes the inputs above, applies Required target salary, and returns the outputs below. The displayed result is therefore reproducible in the linked calculator.
| Measure | Result | Interpretation |
|---|---|---|
| Required target salary | 85,000 currency units/year | Target salary that preserves entered current net annual value. |
| Required salary change | 5,000 currency units/year | Required target salary minus current salary. |
| Required salary change rate | 0.06 share of current salary | Required salary change divided by current salary. |
| Annualised relocation cost | 3,000 currency units/year | One-time relocation costs divided by the comparison horizon. |
Interpret the result and test Target annual living costs
- Required target salary: 85,000 currency units/year. Target salary that preserves entered current net annual value.
- Required salary change: 5,000 currency units/year. Required target salary minus current salary.
- Required salary change rate: 0.06 share of current salary. Required salary change divided by current salary.
- Annualised relocation cost: 3,000 currency units/year. One-time relocation costs divided by the comparison horizon.
| Result | Baseline | Changed-input scenario | How to read it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Required target salary | 85,000 currency units/year | 89,200 currency units/year | Target salary that preserves entered current net annual value. |
| Required salary change | 5,000 currency units/year | 9,200 currency units/year | Required target salary minus current salary. |
| Required salary change rate | 0.06 share of current salary | 0.12 share of current salary | Required salary change divided by current salary. |
| Annualised relocation cost | 3,000 currency units/year | 3,000 currency units/year | One-time relocation costs divided by the comparison horizon. |
