Five seasonal-pay measures answer different questions
| Measure | Meaning | Use |
|---|---|---|
| Seasonal earnings | Actual entered pay for the season | Anchor the cash actually earned |
| Paid-season weekly run rate | Seasonal earnings divided by paid weeks | Compare the pace during paid work |
| Comparison run rate | Weekly rate multiplied by comparison weeks | Hypothetical year-round comparison only |
| Calendar monthly average | Actual seasonal earnings divided by 12 | Spread actual cash across the calendar |
| Off-season weeks | Comparison weeks less paid weeks | Make the unpaid seasonal gap visible |
Worked example: 24 paid weeks inside a 52-week comparison
| Step | Calculation | Result |
|---|---|---|
| Weekly run rate | 24,000 ÷ 24 paid weeks | 1,000 per week |
| Hypothetical run rate | 1,000 × 52 comparison weeks | 52,000 per comparison period |
| Calendar monthly average | 24,000 ÷ 12 | 2,000 per month |
| Off-season time | 52 − 24 | 28 weeks |
Changing paid weeks changes pace, not actual earnings
Hold actual seasonal earnings at 24,000 and change only paid season weeks. A shorter season produces a higher weekly pace and hypothetical run rate, but the entered 24,000 of actual cash remains unchanged.
| Paid season | Weekly run rate | Actual seasonal earnings |
|---|---|---|
| 20 weeks | 1,200 per week | 24,000 |
| 24 weeks baseline | 1,000 per week | 24,000 |
| 30 weeks | 800 per week | 24,000 |
Budget from timing, not the headline run rate
- Confirm actual payment dates and paid season weeks.
- Keep off-season income separate rather than assuming the seasonal rate continues.
- Map recurring costs against the calendar monthly average and cash timing.
- Verify taxes, benefits and income-support rules separately for the relevant market.
