1. Formulas and units

Expected total pay
expectedTotalPay = basePay + bonusAmount ร— probability

Where

basePay
Base annual pay (currency units/year)Source: Work record
bonusAmount
Bonus amount (currency units)Source: Work record
probability
Probability of payout (probability)Source: User assumption
bonusAmount
Stated bonus (currency units)Source: Calculated output
expectedTotalPay
Expected total pay (currency units/year)Source: Calculated output
Stated bonus
bonusAmount = amount basis ? entered bonusAmount : basePay ร— bonusRate

Where

basePay
Base annual pay (currency units/year)Source: Work record
basis
Bonus basis (selected basis)Source: User decision
bonusRate
Bonus rate (decimal rate)Source: Work record
bonusAmount
Bonus amount (currency units)Source: Work record
bonusAmount
Stated bonus (currency units)Source: Calculated output
Pay if bonus is paid
grossPayWithBonus = basePay + bonusAmount

Where

basePay
Base annual pay (currency units/year)Source: Work record
bonusAmount
Bonus amount (currency units)Source: Work record
bonusAmount
Stated bonus (currency units)Source: Calculated output
grossPayWithBonus
Pay if bonus is paid (currency units/year)Source: Calculated output
Probability-weighted bonus
expectedBonus = bonusAmount ร— probability

Where

bonusAmount
Bonus amount (currency units)Source: Work record
probability
Probability of payout (probability)Source: User assumption
bonusAmount
Stated bonus (currency units)Source: Calculated output
expectedBonus
Probability-weighted bonus (currency units/year)Source: Calculated output

Money inputs and outputs use the currency selected in the scenario without changing the canonical methodology. Pay, time, benefits and work-related costs use the units stated beside each input.

2. Worked example

Input assumptions

Base annual pay of 60,000 with a 10% bonus and a 75% estimated chance of payout.

Calculation and outputs

Example

Base annual pay of 60,000 with a 10% bonus and a 75% estimated chance of payout.

Stated bonus
6,000.00 currency units
Pay if bonus is paid
66,000.00 currency units
Probability-weighted bonus
4,500.00 currency units
Expected total pay
64,500.00 currency units

The full payout and probability-weighted pay are shown separately so contingent pay is not treated as certain.

Interpretation

Use expected total pay as a scenario value while keeping the full payout visibly contingent.

3. Validation and boundary checks

  • Zero probability leaves expected total pay equal to base pay.
  • Certain payout makes expected total equal full gross pay.
  • Negative pay, bonus or probability outside 0 to 1 returns an input error.

4. Assumptions and source classification

  • Probability is a user estimate.
  • The bonus and base pay use the same annual gross basis.
  • No tax or timing discount is applied.

This calculator has no current policy-data dependency. Its work and pay assumptions are user supplied. Registered family-level regression suites exercise the shared work-logic engine and worked-result reconciliation.

5. Limitations

  • Expected value is not a guaranteed payout.
  • Bonus rules, caps and performance conditions are not inferred.
  • The result does not calculate take-home pay.

This is educational decision support, not personalised tax, legal, financial or career advice. Check the treatment of your circumstances under the rules that apply to you and seek qualified advice where appropriate.

6. Update and evidence policy

Registered family-level suites test formula invariants and example reconciliation; the release ledger records that coverage without claiming a separate oracle for every line of public copy. There is no official threshold or benchmark to refresh for this calculator. Work and pay inputs remain user-supplied because they vary by person, job and contract.
