1. Formulas and units
annualDifferentialPay = differentialPerHour ร annualHoursWhere
- differentialPerHour
- Differential per hour (currency units/hour)Source: Calculated output
- annualDifferentialPay
- Annual differential pay (currency units/year)Source: Calculated output
- annualHours
- Annual Hours (hours/year)Source: Calculated output
differentialPerHour = amount basis ? differentialAmount : baseHourlyRate ร differentialRateWhere
- baseHourlyRate
- Base hourly rate (currency units/hour)Source: Work record
- basis
- Differential basis (selected basis)Source: User decision
- differentialRate
- Differential rate (decimal rate)Source: Work record
- differentialAmount
- Differential per hour (currency units/hour)Source: Work record
- differentialPerHour
- Differential per hour (currency units/hour)Source: Calculated output
effectiveHourlyRate = baseHourlyRate + differentialPerHourWhere
- baseHourlyRate
- Base hourly rate (currency units/hour)Source: Work record
- effectiveHourlyRate
- Hourly rate with differential (currency units/hour)Source: Calculated output
totalAnnualPay = (baseHourlyRate + differentialPerHour) ร hoursPerShift ร shiftsPerWeek ร weeksPerYearWhere
- baseHourlyRate
- Base hourly rate (currency units/hour)Source: Work record
- hoursPerShift
- Hours per shift (hours/shift)Source: Work record
- shiftsPerWeek
- Shifts per week (shifts/week)Source: Work record
- weeksPerYear
- Weeks per year (weeks/year)Source: Work record
- totalAnnualPay
- Total annual shift pay (currency units/year)Source: Calculated output
Money inputs and outputs use the currency selected in the scenario without changing the canonical methodology. Pay, time, benefits and work-related costs use the units stated beside each input.
2. Worked example
Input assumptions
Base hourly pay of 25 with a 10% differential across five 8-hour shifts for 48 weeks.
Calculation and outputs
Example
Base hourly pay of 25 with a 10% differential across five 8-hour shifts for 48 weeks.
- Differential per hour
- 2.50 currency units
- Annual differential pay
- 4,800.00 currency units
- Hourly rate with differential
- 27.50 currency units
- Total annual shift pay
- 52,800.00 currency units
The result separates base shift pay from the extra amount created by the differential.
Interpretation
Use annual differential pay as the extra amount attributable to the eligible shift pattern.
3. Validation and boundary checks
- A zero differential produces no additional pay.
- Amount and percentage bases produce the same result when their hourly values match.
- Impossible schedule inputs return an input error.
4. Assumptions and source classification
- Every entered shift hour receives the same differential.
- The base rate and differential are gross amounts.
- No overtime interaction is applied.
This calculator has no current policy-data dependency. Its work and pay assumptions are user supplied. Registered family-level regression suites exercise the shared work-logic engine and worked-result reconciliation.
5. Limitations
- Employer rules may limit which hours qualify.
- Overtime, holidays and local award rules are not inferred.
- Irregular schedules require a representative average.
This is educational decision support, not personalised tax, legal, financial or career advice. Check the treatment of your circumstances under the rules that apply to you and seek qualified advice where appropriate.
6. Update and evidence policy
Registered family-level suites test formula invariants and example reconciliation; the release ledger records that coverage without claiming a separate oracle for every line of public copy. There is no official threshold or benchmark to refresh for this calculator. Work and pay inputs remain user-supplied because they vary by person, job and contract.
