How to use the Childcare and Work Cost Impact calculator

Estimate annual net benefit and value per committed hour using only user-entered costs and deductions.

Put pay, care costs and time on matching bases

The comparison is only coherent when weekly childcare and weekly hours use the same number of work weeks, while pay, deductions and other costs are annual amounts. Enter only costs that belong to the work scenario being tested.

  • Annualise 250 of weekly childcare over the same 48 work weeks.
  • Count 32 weekly work hours plus 4 weekly commute hours.
  • Keep the entered 6,000 deductions separate from the 3,000 other work costs.
  • Do not net off a subsidy or credit unless you have independently established and entered its effect.

Separate annual benefit from value per committed hour

Annual childcare cost = weekly childcare cost ร— work weeks. Annual net benefit = annual pay โˆ’ entered deductions โˆ’ annual childcare cost โˆ’ other annual work costs.

Committed hours = (weekly work hours + weekly commute hours) ร— work weeks. Value per committed hour = annual net benefit รท committed hours. Including commute time answers a personal time-allocation question even though ordinary commuting is not the same as statistical hours worked.

Worked example: what each result answers

Production fixture evaluated by the Childcare and Work Cost Impact calculator
Choice or resultFixture valueDecision meaning
Childcare schedule250 weekly ร— 48 weeks = 12,000Changing either weekly cost or care weeks tests a different care arrangement.
Committed time(32 work + 4 commute) ร— 48 = 1,728 hoursThis denominator captures time given to the work scenario, not only paid hours.
Annual net benefit48,000 โˆ’ 6,000 โˆ’ 12,000 โˆ’ 3,000 = 27,000This compares entered cash inflows and costs; it is not take-home pay.
Hourly and break-even views15.63 per committed hour; 21,000 break-even payThe hourly view supports time comparisons, while break-even shows the pay needed to cover entered costs.
Childcare share25% of annual payThis isolates the entered childcare burden; it does not determine affordability or subsidy eligibility.

Test the costs that can change, then add the factors money misses

Vary childcare weeks, weekly care cost and commute time one at a time. This shows which assumption drives the annual and hourly result and avoids treating one schedule as certain.

The calculation does not infer care availability or quality, career progression, job security, tax, payroll rules, subsidies or credits. Compare those qualitative and local-policy questions separately before acting.
