How to use the Four Day Workweek calculator

Compare annual hours, commute costs, pay and adjusted hourly value across two schedules.

First identify whether the week is reduced or compressed

A reduced-hours proposal lowers total weekly work hours, such as moving from 40 hours over five days to 32 hours over four days. A compressed proposal fits substantially the same weekly hours into fewer, longer days. Both can be called a four-day week, but they do not create the same time result.

Enter weekly hours and workdays independently. Do not treat a missing commute day as proof that total committed time fell: longer workdays can offset part or all of that saving.

Worked comparison: same pay, fewer weekly hours

The production fixture compares 80,000 annual pay in both schedules. The current schedule is 40 hours over five days; the proposal is 32 hours over four days. Both use 52 paid weeks, 60 round-trip commute minutes and 10 currency units of commute cost per workday.

Read each output before reaching a conclusion

The 468-hour saving combines the difference in work hours and commute hours. The 520 saving is direct commute cost, not the value of time. Zero pay difference confirms only that the entered annual pay is equal. The 8.55 hourly difference divides pay after commute costs by each scheduleโ€™s committed hours.

These outputs answer different questions. A schedule can save commute cost without reducing weekly work hours, or improve hourly value while changing annual pay. Keep those trade-offs visible instead of turning them into one winner score.

Stress-test the hours and keep qualitative effects outside the score

Change proposed weekly hours first. Testing 32 hours and then a compressed 40-hour week shows how much of the result comes from reduced work time rather than one fewer commute day. Also test proposed pay and commute assumptions if they are still being negotiated.

Work intensity, schedule control, handover expectations, productivity, wellbeing and legal entitlement are not priced by this Global calculation. Record them alongside the numeric comparison and check any local employment rules separately.
