Find and label each entered plan term
| Term | Role in the estimate | Verification question |
|---|---|---|
| Eligible annual pay | Pay basis used by the entered formula | Which pay does the plan define as eligible? |
| Employee contribution rate | Creates the employee annual contribution | What rate is the scenario using? |
| Match rate | Applies to the match-eligible contribution | What employer rate is stated? |
| Eligible-pay rate | Limits the contribution receiving a match | Where does matching stop? |
| Annual employer cap | Limits the employer amount | Is the entered cap annual? |
| Vested share | Creates a separate vested scenario | What share is vested under the applicable terms? |
Follow the contribution-to-vesting waterfall
First calculate the employee contribution from eligible pay. Limit the contribution used for matching to the entered eligible-pay rate, apply the employer match rate, cap the employer amount, and only then apply the vested share.
Keeping each step visible prevents a capped stated match from being confused with the amount currently vested.
Worked example: cap and vesting change the headline value
| Waterfall step | Calculation or boundary | Result |
|---|---|---|
| Employee contribution | 80,000 × 6% | 4,800 |
| Uncapped employer match | 4,800 × 50% | 2,400 |
| Employer match after cap | Minimum of 2,400 and 2,000 | 2,000 |
| Vested scenario | 2,000 × 80% | 1,600 |
| Entered full-cap point | 5% of eligible pay | 4,000 employee contribution |
Verify plan facts before relying on the scenario
- Confirm eligible pay, matching definitions and the annual cap in the plan document.
- Confirm the applicable vesting terms rather than assuming a schedule.
- Check eligibility, tax and withdrawal treatment separately.
- Exclude investment growth because the calculator estimates contributions, not future value.
- Treat the full-cap output as a description of entered terms, not contribution advice.

Worked example: Employer Retirement Match Value Calculator
The calculator normalizes the inputs above, applies Employer match, and returns the outputs below. The displayed result is therefore reproducible in the linked calculator.
| Measure | Result | Interpretation |
|---|---|---|
| Annual employer match | 2,000 currency units/year | Employer match after applying the entered eligible-pay limit and cap. |
| Vested annual match | 1,600 currency units/year | Employer match multiplied by the entered vested share. |
| Employee annual contribution | 4,800 currency units/year | Eligible annual pay multiplied by the employee contribution rate. |
| Contribution rate for full match | 0.05 share of eligible pay | Employee contribution rate needed to reach the entered plan maximum. |
