Build an annual component inventory
| Component | Annual value to enter | Interpretation |
|---|---|---|
| Base pay | Stated annual gross pay | Recurring cash foundation |
| Bonus, commission and other cash | Annual stated or scenario cash amounts | Variable cash, kept separate from base |
| Retirement | Entered employer-funded annual value | May differ from vested or personal value |
| Health | Entered annual benefit scenario | Does not prove coverage quality |
| Equity | Entered annual face or expected scenario | Must retain its uncertainty label |
| Other benefits | Other non-duplicated annual values | Include only values chosen for this comparison |
Label each value before adding it
A stated amount comes from an offer or plan document. An expected value applies explicit uncertainty assumptions. Employer-funded cost describes what the employer contributes, face value is an unadjusted headline amount, and personal value reflects the worker’s own decision context.
These labels answer different questions. Convert them to the same annual time basis, but do not erase the distinction between them.
Worked example: cash and benefits kept visible
| Layer | Included components | Result |
|---|---|---|
| Variable cash | 8,000 bonus + 0 commission + 2,000 other cash | 10,000 |
| Cash compensation | 80,000 base + 10,000 variable cash | 90,000 |
| Benefits | 4,000 retirement + 6,000 health + 10,000 equity + 1,000 other | 21,000 |
| Total compensation | 90,000 cash + 21,000 benefits | 111,000 |
| Composition | Benefits ÷ total; base ÷ total | 18.92% benefits; 72.07% base |
Avoid double counting and test uncertainty
- Do not put the same employer contribution in both a component tool output and other benefits.
- Choose whether an equity entry is face value or an expected scenario and retain that label.
- Change one uncertain value at a time so the source of a scenario difference remains clear.
- Keep gross, pre-tax package value separate from take-home pay.
- Do not treat this user-entered package as a market benchmark.
